Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes, the latest comedy-thriller, hit the screens on Christmas 2024. Featuring comedian Vennela Kishore in the title role, let’s delve into how the film fared.

Story

Om Prakash, nicknamed Sherlock Holmes (Vennela Kishore), is a quirky detective from Srikakulam, tasked with solving the murder of a young woman, Mary (Dokala Navya), in Vizag. Given just seven days to crack the case, he identifies seven suspects, including Balakrishna (Ravi Teja Mahadasyam), Bhramaramba (Ananya Nagalla), Ramesh Patnaik (Prabhakar), and others. As he pieces together the evidence, the mystery unfolds. Who killed Mary, and what connects these suspects to the crime? These questions form the crux of the story.

Plus Points

Vennela Kishore shines in the lead role, exhibiting good comedic timing and effectively using the Srikakulam accent to resonate with the audience. His character’s mischievous behaviour is well-explained in the second half, providing clarity to his role.

Ananya Nagalla impresses with her dual-shaded character, convincingly portraying different facets. Some scenes might frustrate viewers due to her character’s behaviour, showcasing her acting prowess.

Raviteja delivers a satisfactory performance, while Prabhakar, Bhadram, Anish Kuruvilla, and others perform within their character limits. The dialogues related to Srikakulam and the regional song are commendable additions.

Minus Points

Crime comedy thrillers require an engaging storyline with unexpected twists to keep the audience intrigued. Unfortunately, this film falls short, as the killer’s identity becomes predictable early on, particularly for genre regulars.

The first half is slow-paced, feeling unengaging and directionless. Although the second half picks up pace, providing some entertainment, the overall narrative lacks the necessary grip. Some comedy scenes are bland.

The storytelling appears ordinary, especially in the first hour, and the screenplay could have been tighter. Dubbing for characters like Anish Kuruvilla, Siya Gautham, and a supporting female character with a romantic subplot feels mismatched, diminishing their impact and leaving their characters underdeveloped.

Technical Aspects

Writer Mohan makes an average debut as a director. Despite the evident effort, the movie lacks the depth and twists essential for a crime comedy thriller.

The music by Sunil Kashyap and Gyaani is average, and the background score could have been more impactful. Mallikarjun Naragani’s cinematography is acceptable, and the production values are adequate. However, the editing could have been much improved, particularly in the first half.

Verdict

Overall, Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes is a crime comedy thriller that works in parts. While Vennela Kishore and Ananya Nagalla deliver commendable performances, the film struggles to maintain consistent engagement. A predictable storyline, slow-paced first half, and underdeveloped characters weigh it down. Fans of the crime thriller genre might find it worth a try, but it’s best to keep expectations low.
