Malayalam director Rosshan Andrrews makes a stunning debut in Hindi cinema with his latest film, Deva, starring the charismatic Shahid Kapoor and the delightful Pooja Hegde. Released on January 31, this movie has been making waves at the box office. According to Sacnilk, Deva has grossed an impressive ₹18.7 crore net in India within its first three days.
The buzz around Deva continued to grow, with the film raking in around ₹6.8 crore net on its first Sunday, taking the total to ₹18.7 crore net in India. On its opening day, Deva collected ₹5.5 crore net, followed by a 16.36% surge in collections on Saturday, bringing in ₹6.4 crore. Despite facing competition, the movie managed to garner a respectable 6.34% occupancy for its morning shows, 16.32% for the afternoon, and an impressive 22.08% for the evening. While the openings may not be on par with Shahid’s previous hit, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, it remains to be seen how Deva performs by the end of its first week.
Deva is an intriguing remake of Rosshan’s 2013 Malayalam film, Mumbai Police, where Prithviraj Sukumaran originally played the lead role. Rosshan has skillfully reworked the storyline, adding a surprising twist to the climax. Shahid Kapoor takes on the role of ACP Dev Ambre, a determined officer who loses his memory while attempting to solve his best friend’s murder. Pooja Hegde shines as his lover, Diya Sathaye, a tenacious reporter. The film also features stellar performances by Pavail Gulati and Kubbra Sait.
While Shahid’s powerful performance has been widely praised, Deva has received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. Addressing comparisons with his iconic role in Kabir Singh, Shahid said, “It’s an aggressive character, but Deva is very Deva; there is no Kabir Singh in it. Deva is also not like any other character… Till Kabir Singh people said, is he like Tommy Singh in Udta Punjab?”
