2 / 5

Director Subbu Mangadevvi, who previously debuted with the modestly successful Solo Brathuke So Better, teams up for his second film, Bachhala Malli, featuring Allari Naresh in a serious rustic action drama. Known for his serious roles in recent years, Allari Naresh is in need of a unanimous box-office hit. With a reputable production house, Hasya Movies, Amritha Aiyer (who recently delivered a blockbuster with Hanuman), and music director Vishal Chandrashekhar onboard, does this film hit the mark? Let’s delve into the details.

Plot

Bachhala Malli (Allari Naresh) is a stubborn and misguided individual who, due to his strained relationship with his father, drops out of school and succumbs to alcoholism. His life takes a turn when he falls in love with Kaveri (Amritha Aiyer), who brings a sense of purpose to him. The narrative explores the reasons behind Malli’s hatred for his father and the challenges the couple faces.

Performances

Allari Naresh delivers a commendable performance as the headstrong protagonist, particularly shining in the pre-climax and climax. Amritha Aiyer, however, appears miscast, with her modern wardrobe clashing with her rural character from the 1990s, despite the director’s justification. Supporting actors like Rao Ramesh and Achyuth Kumar perform well despite their underwritten roles, while Rohini‘s portrayal as Malli’s mother is overly dramatic. Praveen and Hariteja add some comic relief and emotional depth, while Harsha Chemudu‘s comedy falls flat. Ankith Koyya makes the most of his limited screen time.

Technical Aspects

Vishal Chandrashekhar‘s background score starts strong but lacks consistency. While the song Mari Antha Kopam stands out, the other songs could have been better. Richard M. Nathan‘s cinematography beautifully captures rural coastal Andhra. Chota K. Prasad‘s editing is average, and the production values of Hasya Movies are satisfactory.

Pros

  • Allari Naresh’s Performance
  • Realistic Action Choreography
  • Mari Antha Kopam Song

Cons

  • Lack of Depth in Writing
  • Predictable Screenplay
  • Excessive Songs
  • Melodramatic Narration
  • Inconsistent Lead Actress Characterization
  • Weak Protagonist Characterization

Analysis

While director Sukumar’s Rangasthalam left a lasting impact with its raw and rustic backdrop, few Telugu films have achieved similar success. Tamil filmmakers excel in this genre with their hard-hitting, tightly woven screenplays and strong emotions. Unfortunately, Subbu Mangadevvi‘s attempt in Bachhala Malli lacks the depth and coherence needed.

The director’s portrayal of the lead character’s evolution feels forced due to weak writing. Despite Allari Naresh’s solid performance, the predictable and outdated screenplay undermines the film. The supporting cast, though talented, is hampered by underdeveloped characters.

Bachhala Malli is a sincere attempt to craft a realistic, hard-hitting movie, but it ultimately falls short due to poor writing and lack of emotional depth.
